A Camera in Every Pocket

I think the common use of a smartphone camera comes from the fact that those photos are being taken through that medium purely for the matter of convenience without everyone going and having to find a real camera every time they want to capture something. No one could have predicted what effect that convenience would have on our society today.

Facts:

  • "Photographers are getting destroyed by the rise of iPhones. The photographers who used to make £1,000 for a weekend taking wedding pictures are the ones facing the squeeze. Increasingly we don't need photographers – we can do just as well ourselves" (Olmos para. 7).
  • Why is digital lazy? "It's a scattergun approach. You snap away thinking, 'One of these shots will work', rather than concentrate on capturing the image." (Para. 14)

Conceptual Photography

1a) I think this is a great photo with good focus and composition.
1b) This photo is focused and the exposure is used to make the picture look dark.
1c) I think the lighting and the focus is appropriate for this image.
1d)This photograph is in focus and the top half of the photo is darker than the bottom half.
1e) It is hard to tell whether the photo is in focus or not because the subject is so far away.
2) All of the photos I have chosen have parts with dark lighting.
3) With the exception of one, all of these photos seem to have a negative mood to me.
4b) The photo shows what I presume is a male rolling some dice. I took a darker approach while observing this photo and came to the conclusion that this man has some sort of problem with gambling and is trying to win back his debt.
4d) I think the story in this photograph is of two little girls who may not live in an ideal place but are having fun doing the best that they can.

Gottfried Helnwein part 2

I wouldn't say that this viewpoint changed my interpretation because I originally had thought it looked like a billboard and the reality is pretty close to my guess. There is a giant poster of young female taking up the whole side of a building. To me, the female has one of those faces where it is hard to observe if she is young or if she is older with the face of a young girl. I can't tell if the image is contiguous or not. I think this is in an industrial location. You can see a vehicle in front of it so I would assume people are permitted to drive in that area, in addition to how large it is I think everyone will see *the it. I can't really distinguish the emotion of the girl in the image. If I'm being honest, I don't see the point to this piece thus, making it more difficult for me to answer some of these questions.

*- "Given the image's location, who do you think will see the it?" ;)

Gottfried Helnwein

The background of the photo is about half of a woman's face and the photo shows a man on a rope climbing the face about two-thirds up the picture. To me, think it looks like it is picture of a man climbing up a billboard of a woman's face. I believe that it is both an artistic and documentary image. I don't think it was photoshopped. I can't come up with any possible meaning or intent in the image.

The Photographic Critique

http://time.com/3423489/time-picks-the-top-10-photos-of-2013/
1) My first impression upon seeing this photo was that I felt like that shark and I would be friends if I were a shark.
2) This photo was taken by David Jenkins in Seal Island, South Africa on July 26, 2013. Jenkins wanted to photograph the interaction between the great white sharks and their prey.
3) The tremendous great white shark is making a great splash in the center of the photo and to the left of it you can see a brown seal making its way back into the water.
4) I'm a big fan of the shark. It is unfortunate that the water being splashed around by the shark is blocking a clearer view of the sharks bottom half.
5) a) The main subject and forefront of the photo are in focus.
    b) There isn't any unwanted dust or glare in the photo.
    c)  I see no problems with the colors in the photo.
    d) The lighting in this photo comes from the right and shines right on the underside of the shark.
    e) This photo seems to be taken with a higher exposure.
    f) I would say normal contrast.
6) A) There isn't a specific emotion that I feel when I look at this photo.
    B)  If I'm being honest, the major reason I chose this photo was because the shark caught my                     attention.

1) My first impression when I saw this photo was, "PUPPIES!"
2) This was taken by Julie McGuire in Teluk Bahang, Penang, Malaysia.
3)
4) I like all of the dogs in the photo.
5) a) The photo looks to be in good focus.
    b) I believe that the dust, if any, captured in the photo was on purpose.
    c) The color looks fine.
    d) The lighting seems to be coming from the middle of the photo.
    e) Medium exposure.
    f) Low contrast.
6) A) I feel joy because of all of the dogs in the photo.
    B) I like this photo because of all the dogs that are gathered together.
